Easy Homemade Apple Crisp

Prep Time: 15 minutes; Cook Time: 40–45 minutes; Total Time: 1 hour; Servings: 6–8

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 medium apples, peeled and sliced
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Crisp Topping:

  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt

For Serving:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Caramel sauce, optional

Instructions

1. Prepare the Apples

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Peel, core, and slice the apples into approximately ¼-inch pieces. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a combination of both work well.

2. Make the Apple Filling

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and vanilla.

Toss until the apples are evenly coated, then transfer them to a lightly greased 9 × 9-inch baking dish.

3. Prepare the Crisp Topping

In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Add the cold cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to work it into the dry ingredients until coarse crumbs form.

4. Assemble the Apple Crisp

Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples, making sure to cover the filling without packing it down.

5. Bake Until Golden

Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.

If the topping browns too quickly, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil.

6. Cool and Serve

Allow the apple crisp to cool for approximately 10–15 minutes before serving.

Spoon into bowls and top with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Why This Recipe Works

The combination of sweet and tart apples creates a balanced filling, while cinnamon and nutmeg bring out their natural fall flavors.

Cold butter helps create a crumbly topping that becomes golden and crisp during baking. Rolled oats add texture, while brown sugar contributes a rich, caramel-like sweetness.

Unlike traditional apple pie, apple crisp doesn't require preparing or rolling out pastry dough, making it a quicker and easier alternative.

Tips for the Best Homemade Apple Crisp

  • Use a combination of apples for a balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Slice apples evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  • Use cold butter to create a crumbly, crispy topping.
  • Choose old-fashioned rolled oats for the best texture.
  • Avoid overmixing the topping to maintain its crumbly consistency.
  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts for extra crunch.
  • Let the crisp rest before serving so the filling can thicken slightly.
