Instructions
1. Prepare the Cupcake Pan
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners.
2. Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Break apart any lumps of cocoa powder before adding the wet ingredients.
3. Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla.
Whisk until the ingredients are mostly combined.
Gradually pour in the hot coffee or water and mix until smooth. The batter will be relatively thin.
4. Fill the Cupcake Liners
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cupcake liners, filling each approximately ⅔ full.
Avoid overfilling the liners so the cupcakes have enough room to rise.
5. Bake
Bake for approximately 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with only a few moist crumbs.
Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Cool completely before decorating.
Make the Buttercream
6. Beat the Butter
Add the softened butter to a large mixing bowl and beat for approximately 2–3 minutes until smooth and creamy.
7. Add the Powdered Sugar
Gradually add the powdered sugar while continuing to mix on low speed.
Once incorporated, add the vanilla, salt, and 2 tablespoons of cream or milk.
Beat until light and fluffy. Add additional cream if necessary to reach your preferred piping consistency.
8. Add the Halloween Colors
Divide the frosting between several bowls and add your preferred food coloring.
Orange, purple, green, black, and white can be combined in different ways to create a variety of Halloween designs.
Decorate the Halloween Cupcakes
Once the cupcakes are completely cool, pipe the buttercream onto each cupcake.
For monster cupcakes, use brightly colored frosting and finish with candy eyes.
For ghost cupcakes, pipe white buttercream upward into a tall swirl and add mini chocolate chips for the eyes.
For pumpkin cupcakes, use orange buttercream and pipe vertical sections to resemble a pumpkin. Finish with a small amount of green frosting for the stem.
For spiderweb cupcakes, cover the cupcake with frosting and pipe circles of melted chocolate over the surface. Drag a toothpick from the center outward to create a web pattern.
For graveyard cupcakes, sprinkle crushed chocolate cookies over the frosting to resemble dirt and add a cookie or piece of chocolate as a tombstone.
Why This Recipe Works
Cocoa powder gives the cupcakes a deep chocolate flavor, while vegetable oil and buttermilk help keep the crumb soft and moist. Hot coffee can enhance the chocolate flavor without making the cupcakes taste strongly like coffee.
The vanilla buttercream is thick enough for piping while remaining easy to divide and color. Starting with one basic frosting also makes it possible to create several different Halloween designs from a single batch.
