Homemade Sourdough Starter

Homemade Sourdough Starter

Making your own sourdough starter is the first step to baking delicious artisan bread at home. With just flour, water, and a little patience, you'll create a living culture of wild yeast that produces flavorful loaves with a beautifully chewy texture and crisp crust. Once established, your starter can be used for everything from classic sourdough bread to pizza dough, pancakes, and more.

Easy Homemade Sourdough Starter 🌾

This beginner-friendly sourdough starter requires only two ingredients and about a week of daily feeding.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (Day 1)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for feedings)
  • Filtered or room-temperature water

Instructions

Day 1: Start the Culture

In a clean glass jar, combine 1 cup whole wheat flour with ½ cup filtered water. Stir until no dry flour remains. Cover loosely with a lid or cloth and leave at room temperature for 24 hours.

Day 2: First Feeding

You may notice a few bubbles. Discard about half of the starter, then add:

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup water

Mix well, cover loosely, and let sit for another 24 hours.

Days 3–6: Continue Feeding

Repeat the same feeding process every 24 hours:

  • Discard half of the starter.
  • Feed with ½ cup flour and ¼ cup water.
  • Stir thoroughly and leave at room temperature.

As the days progress, the starter should become more bubbly, rise after feeding, and develop a pleasantly tangy aroma.

Day 7: Ready to Bake

Your starter is ready when it consistently doubles in size within 4–6 hours after feeding and is full of bubbles.

Why This Recipe Works 🍞

Wild yeast and beneficial bacteria naturally present in flour and the environment create fermentation over time. Regular feedings strengthen the culture, resulting in a healthy starter capable of producing beautifully risen sourdough with incredible flavor and texture.

Tips for a Healthy Sourdough Starter

  • Use filtered water if possible, as chlorine can slow fermentation.
  • Feed consistently at the same time each day.
  • Keep it warm, ideally between 70–75°F (21–24°C).
  • Use a clean jar to help maintain a healthy culture.
  • Don't worry if progress is slow—every starter develops at its own pace.
