Candied Orange Peels: How to Make Them at Home

Candied orange peels are a sweet, zesty treat that are perfect on their own, as a garnish for desserts, or even dipped in chocolate for an extra indulgence. While they might seem fancy, making them at home is surprisingly simple — it just takes a bit of patience and the right tools.

What You Need

Ingredients

  • 3–4 large oranges
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for coating)
  • 1 cup water
  • Optional: dark chocolate for dipping

Equipment

  • Sharp knife or vegetable peeler
  • Saucepan or small pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Cooling rack or parchment paper
  • Zester (optional, for extra orange flavor)

Tip: A small saucepan is ideal for simmering the peels gently without burning the sugar, giving you perfectly tender and sweet candied peels every time.

Step 1: Prepare the Peels

  • Wash oranges thoroughly.
  • Peel the oranges, removing as much of the white pith as possible. Slice into thin strips.
  • Optional: save the zest for extra flavor.

Step 2: Blanch the Peels

  • Boil the orange peels in water for 10–15 minutes, then drain. Repeat 2–3 times to remove bitterness.

Step 3: Simmer in Sugar Syrup

  • Combine sugar and water in a saucepan, bringing to a simmer.
  • Add the peels and cook gently until translucent and tender (about 45–60 minutes).
  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 4: Dry and Coat

  • Remove peels with a slotted spoon and place on a cooling rack or parchment paper.
  • Toss lightly in granulated sugar while still slightly sticky.
  • Let dry for several hours or overnight.

Optional Step 5: Chocolate Dip

  • Melt dark chocolate and dip half of each peel for a decadent twist.
  • Let chocolate set before serving.

Why Candied Orange Peels Work So Well

  • Balances sweet and tangy flavors for a bright, refreshing treat.
  • Adds elegance to desserts, baked goods, or holiday platters.
  • Can be made ahead and stored, making them perfect for gifting.
