Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the filling:

  • ½ cup raisins or sultanas
  • ½ cup candied orange peel
  • Zest of 1 orange

For the glaze (optional):

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp milk

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add yeast mixture, eggs, butter, and vanilla. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
  3. Fold in raisins, candied orange peel, and orange zest. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1–2 hours.
  4. Shape dough into a dome and place in a panettone mold or a tall, round baking pan. Let rise another 30–45 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top with egg yolk mixture if using.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown and a skewer comes out clean. Cool completely before slicing.
