How to Properly Use a Knife Sharpener

A sharp knife is essential for safe and efficient cooking. Using a knife sharpener helps maintain your blades, ensuring they stay in top condition. Here’s a quick guide on how to properly use one.

Step 1: Choose the Right Sharpener
There are different types of knife sharpeners—manual pull-through, electric, and sharpening stones. Choose the one that suits your needs. Manual sharpeners are easy for beginners, while stones offer more control for experienced users.

Step 2: Prepare the Sharpener
Set the sharpener on a flat surface. For a sharpening stone, lubricate it with water or oil to reduce friction.

Step 3: Hold the Knife Properly
Grip the knife handle firmly and maintain an angle of 15-20 degrees, depending on your knife’s requirements.

Step 4: Sharpen the Blade

  • Manual Sharpener: Place the knife in the sharpener’s slot and pull it through smoothly 3-5 times on each side.

  • Electric Sharpener: Gently guide the knife through the machine as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Sharpening Stone: Draw the knife across the stone with even strokes, starting with the coarse side, then finish with the finer side.

Step 5: Test the Sharpness
Test your knife’s sharpness by slicing through a piece of paper or a tomato. If it cuts smoothly, it’s ready.

Step 6: Clean and Maintain
After sharpening, clean both your knife and sharpener. Regular sharpening will keep your knives in excellent condition.
