Homemade Applesauce Recipe

Homemade Applesauce Recipe

There's nothing quite like the comforting taste of homemade applesauce. It's easy to make, delicious, and perfect as a snack or side dish. Here’s a simple recipe to get you started!

Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (about 6-8 medium apples), peeled, cored, and chopped

  • 1 cup water or apple juice

  • ½ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Start by peeling, coring, and chopping the apples into small pieces.

  2. Cook the Apples: Combine the chopped apples and water (or apple juice) in a large pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft.

  3. Mash the Apples: Once soft, remove the pot from heat. Use a potato masher or immersion blender to mash the apples to your desired consistency—smooth or chunky.

  4. Add Sugar and Spice: Stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice (if using). Taste and adjust the sweetness as needed.

  5. Cool and Store: Let the applesauce cool before transferring it to jars or containers. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for longer storage.

Tips

  • Apple Variety: Use a mix of sweet and tart apples, like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji, for a balanced flavour.

  • No Sugar Option: If you prefer unsweetened applesauce, you can omit the sugar and let the natural sweetness of the apples shine through.

Enjoy warm or chilled homemade applesauce, and savour its delightful flavour anytime!
