Baking bread at home can be a rewarding and comforting experience. With just a few simple ingredients and some patience, you can make delicious, fresh bread from scratch. Here’s a basic recipe to get you started!
Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (optional)
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. If the yeast doesn’t foam, it may be expired, and you’ll need to start over with new yeast.
2. Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Add the olive oil if you’re using it. Stir with a wooden spoon or your hands until a sticky dough forms.
3. Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes, folding and pushing the dough with the heel of your hands, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, add a small amount of flour, but be careful not to add too much.
4. Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
5. Shape the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Shape the dough into a loaf by folding in the sides and rolling it up, then place it in a greased loaf pan.
6. Second Rise
Cover the dough again and let it rise for another 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until it has risen above the edge of the pan.
7. Bake the Bread
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Now you have freshly baked, homemade bread! Enjoy it on its own, with butter, or as part of a delicious sandwich.
