How to Bake Bread at Home

Baking bread at home is a rewarding experience, and with this simple recipe, you can enjoy fresh, homemade bread in just a few hours. Here’s how to make a classic loaf of bread.

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional, for a softer crust)

Directions:

  1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and stir gently. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. Mix the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast is activated, pour it into the flour mixture along with olive oil (if using). Stir until a dough forms.

  3. Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, a little at a time.

  4. First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

  5. Shape the Dough
After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Shape the dough into a loaf by folding the edges towards the center and rolling it up tightly.

  6. Second Rise
Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan. Cover and let it rise for another 30–60 minutes, or until it’s puffed up and nearly doubled in size.

  7. Bake the Bread
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  8. Cool and Serve
Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Pro Tips:

  • Don’t rush the rises; they help develop the texture and flavor of the bread.

  • Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure the water is the correct temperature for the yeast (110°F/43°C).

Fresh, homemade bread is perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just enjoying with butter. Happy baking!
