Homemade Tzatziki Recipe

Homemade Tzatziki Recipe

Cool, creamy, and packed with fresh Mediterranean flavors, homemade tzatziki is one of the easiest dips you can make from scratch. Made with Greek yogurt, crisp cucumber, garlic, and fresh herbs, this versatile sauce pairs perfectly with grilled meats, pita bread, roasted vegetables, or as a refreshing spread for wraps and sandwiches. Once you make it at home, you'll never want the store-bought version again.

Classic Homemade Tzatziki

This authentic-style tzatziki is rich, tangy, and incredibly fresh, coming together in just minutes with a handful of simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cucumber

Grate the cucumber and place it in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth. Squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible to prevent a watery dip.

2. Combine the Ingredients

In a medium bowl, add the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, dill, mint, salt, and pepper.

3. Mix Until Smooth

Stir everything together until the herbs and cucumber are evenly distributed throughout the yogurt.

4. Chill

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop. For the best taste, let it chill for 2–3 hours before serving.

5. Garnish & Serve

Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and garnish with fresh dill. Serve with warm pita bread, grilled chicken, lamb, fresh vegetables, or use it as a spread for wraps and sandwiches.

Why This Recipe Works

Greek yogurt creates a thick, creamy base while cucumber adds a refreshing crunch. Fresh dill and garlic deliver classic Mediterranean flavor, while lemon juice brightens every bite. The result is a light, flavorful dip that's perfect for entertaining, meal prep, or adding a fresh touch to everyday meals.

Tips for the Best Tzatziki

  • Drain the cucumber well to keep the dip thick and creamy.
  • Use full-fat Greek yogurt for the richest flavor and texture.
  • Let it rest before serving so the garlic and herbs can fully infuse the yogurt.
  • Taste after chilling and adjust the salt or lemon juice if needed.
