How to Do Latte Art (Beginner Guide)

Creating latte art might look intimidating, but with the right technique and tools, it’s something you can learn at home. Latte art is all about combining rich espresso with smooth steamed milk to form designs like hearts and rosettas on your coffee surface.

Below is an easy step-by-step guide to help you get started.

What You Need

Equipment

  • Espresso-capable coffee machine (with steam wand)
  • Milk pitcher
  • Fresh espresso beans
  • Milk (whole milk is easiest)

Using a coffee machine with a reliable steam wand makes steaming milk and creating microfoam much easier — and you’ll get better consistency in your pours.

Step 1: Pull a Good Espresso Shot

Start with a fresh shot of espresso — look for a golden-brown crema on top. That crema is what gives your milk foam something to contrast with, so designs are more visible.

Step 2: Steam Milk for Microfoam

Microfoam = tiny, silky bubbles that create a smooth texture.

How to steam:

  1. Pour cold milk into your pitcher (about 1/3 full).
  2. Place the steam wand just below the milk surface.
  3. Turn on the steam for 1–2 seconds to incorporate air (a soft hiss).
  4. Submerge the wand deeper and heat until ~60–65°C (warm but not boiling).
  5. Tap and swirl the pitcher to remove larger bubbles.

Smooth, velvety milk is the foundation of good latte art.

Step 3: Pour for Design

  1. Start pouring milk from a higher distance to mix it with the espresso.
  2. When the cup is about halfway full, bring the pitcher closer to the surface.
  3. Pour more steadily and use small wrist movements to shape your design.

Easy Beginner Designs

Heart

  • Pour in the center until white foam appears.
  • Drag the stream through the foam to form a heart tip.

Rosetta (Leaf)

  • Once foam rises, wiggle the pitcher back and forth while pulling it backward, then finish with a steady pull-through.

Simple Tulip

  • Pour a small circle, stop, pour another circle on top, finish with a pull-through.

Tool Tip

Latte art starts with good tools — and nothing makes that easier than a quality coffee machine with a steam wand that can consistently produce rich espresso and perfectly steamed milk.
