Shamrock Shake Recipe: Make It at Home

Shamrock Shake Recipe: Make It at Home

The Shamrock Shake is a minty, creamy classic that only shows up for a short time each year — but you can easily recreate it at home. Smooth vanilla ice cream blended with cool mint flavour and topped with whipped cream makes it a fun, nostalgic treat. With the right tools, you’ll get that ultra-smooth, frothy texture every time.

What You Need

Ingredients

Vanilla ice cream
Milk
Peppermint extract (not spearmint toothpaste flavour — a little goes a long way)
Green food colouring (optional, for the classic look)
Whipped cream
 Maraschino cherry (optional)

Equipment

Blender
Measuring spoons
Tall glass
Spatula
Ice cream scoop

Tip: A high-powered blender ensures the shake is perfectly smooth and evenly coloured without over-melting the ice cream.

Step 1: Blend

Add 2–3 scoops of vanilla ice cream to your blender.
Pour in just enough milk to help it blend (start small — you can always add more).
Add a tiny drop of peppermint extract.
 Blend until smooth and thick.

Step 2: Adjust

Taste and adjust mint flavour if needed.
Add a drop of green food colouring and pulse to combine if you want the classic look.

Step 3: Serve

Pour into a chilled glass.
Top with whipped cream and a cherry if desired.
 Serve immediately with a straw.

Why the Shamrock Shake Works So Well

Vanilla ice cream creates a creamy, neutral base.
Peppermint adds a refreshing contrast without overpowering sweetness.
The thick texture makes it feel indulgent and nostalgic.

Tool Tip

A quality blender makes all the difference when it comes to milkshakes. It creates a smooth, lump-free texture and helps control thickness without over-blending. Whether you're making a classic Shamrock Shake or experimenting with custom flavours, having the right blender on hand makes treats like this quicker, creamier, and more consistent every time.
